Three Function Manipulator

3 Function Manipulator

The R.O.V. Three Function Manipulator can be deployed both wet and dry.  It is a modular design, comprised of three separate and distinct functions.  The three functions are Wrist-Elbow-Gripper, and they are normally operated in this configuration.

The modular design allows for the flexibility to change configuration and add extensions between the functions.  They are easily adaptable to all standard and custom R.O.V. crawlers and submersibles.  All three functions are constructed from black anodized aluminum with underwater pluggable connectors.  All have 24V planetary gearmotors, and each weighs approximately 3.5 pounds out of water.

Specifications:

Gripper

Gripper:

  • Grip Pressure: 0 to 115 pounds
  • Jaw Length: 4” long
  • Jaw Range of Motion: 90 ° to a maximum of 6.5” at the tips
  • Size: 2.375” diameter, 11” long - will fit through a 2.75” opening
Wrist

Wrist:

  • Range of Motion: 300 ° of rotation
  • Size: 3.25” diameter, 11” long
Elbow

Elbow:

  • Range of Motion: 210 ° of arc
  • Size: 3.25” diameter, 8.8” long
  • Lifting Capacity: 6 pounds when mated to the gripper

All modules can be operated independently with R.O.V. crawlers and submersibles, and can be adapted to be operated with other host vehicles as well.

Z-Axis

Z-Axis

The Z-axis is an extendible boom unit, which greatly expands the range of remote inspection of the R.O.V. Scarab Series of crawlers.  R.O.V. offers two styles of the Z-axis – the Z-axis I and the Z-axis II.  The Z-axis I is designed for dry use, and the Z-axis II is designed for underwater use.

Z-Axis on Scarab I with Plow The Z-axis is a three section, power-extending boom constructed of hard black anodized aluminum square tubing with stainless steel bolting and polymer bearing surfaces.  The drive system consists of heavy duty motors and drive screws.  The standard boom extends from 4 to 7 feet, tilts from horizontal to vertical, and, when mounted to an R.O.V. Scarab turret, rotates 135°, right or left.  Use of a Z-axis requires the use of a counterweight for stabilization.

Because the Z-axis tilts from horizontal to vertical, close up views of any item from floor level up to 8 feet high are possible.  Using the camera zoom function extends the viewing range even further.  The Z-axis can raise a maximum load of 15 pounds.

Z-Axis used with Needle Scaler

The Z-axis’ combination of boom tilt, extension, turret rotation, and camera tilt allow for maximum position flexibility to view nearly any situation.  It stands approximately 17" high in the horizontal position and 56" high in the vertical collapsed position.  The unit runs to its full extension of 94" in under three minutes.

The Z-Axis Can Perform Many Tasks In Addition To Inspections:

With the use of optional end work tool attachments, the Z-axis can perform many tasks in addition to inspections:

  • welding
  • grinding
  • vacuuming
  • dose mapping
  • solid waste remediation.

Controls for the Z-axis are located in the R.O.V. Standard VOCC

Crusher

Cutting and Crushing Equipment (Crusher shown) is developed by R.O.V. Technologies, Inc. for a variety of size reduction for high level nuclear waste. Designs and manufacturing of the underwater equipment are done on a case by case basis.
